Many people who want to become a nurse sometimes hesitate to because they feel as though it might be difficult. One of the most common types of nurses is a licensed practical nurse. Licensed practical nurses work with registered nurses and doctors to perform various health care tasks, such as observing patients and measuring vital signs. In order to become an LPN you will need to finish your training program in practical nursing as well as your licensing exam. The average LPN salary is a little over $40,000 a year.

Some of the duties that an LPN might do are measuring vital signs, collecting fluid samples, dressing wounds, administering intravenous medications, maintaining patient records, and assisting patients with getting out of bed and dressing. Most LPNs work in long-term care facilities and hospitals. Your schedules will be fairly regular but you may have to work weekends on occasion.

LPNs and LVNs must complete an approved educational program. These programs award a certificate or diploma and typically take about 1 year to complete, but may take longer. They are commonly found in technical schools and community colleges, though some programs may be available in high schools and hospitals. Practical nursing programs combine classroom learning in subjects, such as nursing, biology, and pharmacology. All programs also include supervised clinical experience.

After completing a state-approved educational program, prospective LPNs and LVNs can take the National Council Licensure Examination, or NCLEX-PN. In all states, they must pass the exam to get a license and work as an LPN or LVN. LPNs and LVNs may choose to become certified through professional associations in areas such as gerontology and IV therapy, among others. Certifications show that an LPN or LVN has an advanced level of knowledge about a specific subject.

A large number of licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses are expected to retire over the coming decade, creating potential job openings. Job prospects should also be favorable for LPNs and LVNs, who are willing to work in rural and medically underserved area.

While it may take a long time to obtain a nursing degree but it can be very rewarding. There are a lot of job opportunities available and the salary is very competitive. Take your time to research all of the licensed practical nursing programs in your area to find the best fit.
